Korean guys died after 5 days gaming

Five years ago,  Korean guy, 28 years old, died after online computer game for 50 hours without break, BBC reported. It happened again yesterday, Feb. 16, in South Korea. A guy, now 32-year-old- died in the Internet cafe after playing games for five days. An investigation is underway to find out the relation between game addition and the death.

Can we see a causal relation from this accident?

  1. I personally can't imagine playing video games for five straight days. I wonder what game(s) held his attention and ultimately led to his death? It is odd to see that both deaths occurred in South Korea. I wonder if this happens in other countries and is just note reported.

  2. This is absolute madness in my opinion. And some point someone had to intervene. It creates all kinds of horrible situations. His hygiene, probably the fluctuations of his heart rate, fatigue, and who knows what kind of environment he was in. It is interesting how both reported cases are in South Korea. However, that to me is not the major issue, it is that no one had the decency to step in and just TURN IT OFF. Five days? Unbelievable.

  3. ok the article states "We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official told the Reuters news agency."

They presume? I'm sure they couldn't afford an autopsy but I imagine if one had been performed they more than likely would have found some kind of amphetamine or stimulant in his system because without it i'm not sure this kind of marathon session would have been possible. South Korea is a tough environment, where being the absolute best at something may be the only way you can change your environment and attain more than extreme poverty. I admire the dedication and skill you see in the culture, they are some of the best in the world at many things because of it. But that may also be the reason both deaths from something like this occurred in South Korea, I simply can't imagine the dedication it would take to game yourself death.

  4. Korea is well known as one of the wired countries in the world. Actually the high speed Internet penetration is 1st ranked in the world, too. Notice he was playing video games in Internet cafe where Internet access is available at a very cheap cost, probably $1 per an hour.

I think that for anyone to play video games for 5 hours straight is ridiculous. If it was truly continous without any breaks or distractions, then he died from a combination of reasons. First, probabably playing the game continuously, eye strain, no sleep, no food or water, maybe irregular heart beats resulting from the game. What ever the combination is, it was obviously multiple reasons as to why the guy died.

  6. Was this like a 24/7 internet cafe? I would think that after a while the employees who were working would notice that this guy had been there for 5 days straight. 2 deaths now from excessive video games, maybe the Korean government needs to implement some sort of restrictions on how long people can be in an internet cafe for.
