Internet Use Could Make You Smarter, According to an article on dailytech.com posted February 22, 2010,
The article references a report, based on a study that surveyed almost 900 individuals. How accurate is the study? Just what were the parameters used? Those are just a few of the questions this article brings up.
I'd have to say that in my opinion, it's what you do on the internet, not just being on the internet that may contribute to increasing your smarts, if at all.
The article makes for an interesting read, but so does the comment thread. I found the opinions posted on the article rather entertaining, especially the guy that argues for all of the "real world" experience he's gained as a World of Warcraft Guild Leader.

Haha the "real world" experience guy is classic. I would have to agree with you Danny, quality of content your accessing is probably more important than how much. However, perhaps all that extra-time spent on the internet one will inevitably end up accessing more valuable intellectual content. Also maybe the fact that the internet and games like "World of Warcraft" allow such a connection between users that with enough time spent users might share a collective wealth of knowledge (for example in comment fields such as this). Instead of one who uses the internet less who may be limited more to their own point of view, where it is much more difficult to find the answers to all your questions, so they may not be willing to put forth the effort to find them.

ReplyDeleteThe survey on future of the Internet is interesting, and my idea is that real effects of communication technologies are not stemming from technologies themselves, rather from people, how they use those technologies. That is why I think we need further research on how and why people use the Internet or other related digital applications, such as Twitter, RSS. So we could better understand what the Internet will take us in decades.
